Mesnier Weekly Update
Posted on 03/18/2018

Dear Mesnier Families,

Spring break begins on March 26th.  We invite all students to participate in a spring break reading challenge and are encouraged to complete at least 5 activities over the week.  Students who complete the challenge will earn a special prize. We would love to see pictures of students reading over break. Share your pictures on Mesnier’s Facebook page or send to  We hope you have a wonderful break.

Affton School District Family Survey Series

To ensure that we provide the best service possible to our students, parents, and community, your voice and feedback are important to Affton School District. Over the coming weeks, we’ll be asking for your input on many topics important to our schools. It will take about 5-10 minutes to complete each survey, and we would appreciate your thoughts, insight, and feedback.

If you haven't already, please complete Survey #1 on Early Childhood Education. Please note: You DO NOT need to have a child at Affton Early Childhood to complete this survey.

Thank you for supporting the Dimes for Dogs that Help fundraiser.  Together we collected $450. Congratulations to the classrooms that collected the most.  The students in the winning class received a paw print crayon.

1st grade- Ms. Pfankuch’s & Mrs. Montgomery’s classes

2nd grade- Mrs. Potter’s class

Congratulations to Mesnier’s 2018-2019 Teacher of the Year, Mrs. Mandy Hogan!

We hope you can join us this Thursday for STEM Night.  We are still accepting donations of materials for our inventing room.  Everything needs to be clean and dry and not breakable or sharp (so no cans or glass- we’re looking more for cardboard and plastic). If you have other materials you would like to donate that would help create great inventions (such as fabrics, buttons, bubble wrap, craft foam, etc.) please send those too!

The Scoop from Special Subjects

                                                        March 2018 Edition

In March we have been learning all about colors: hot, cold, primary, secondary, ROY G. BIV,  rainbow order, and color mixing. After color, we will finish up the year with some art history lessons.

Kindergarten has been exploring new parts of the library and enjoying the “What if you had…” animal series books.

First and second graders have been reading the Show-Me Nominee books.  Classes will be voting soon for their favorite book. This is such a fun unit because the students get to read lots of different books.  Ask your child what their favorite has been so far.

It’s hard to believe we are starting the 4th quarter already!  MakerSpace has been a very busy with a lot of making, creating, and exploring.  We have a lot of changes in our labs this month. In Momentum we are making Lego zip line carriers.  The nuts and bolts are back out at the Hands-On lab. We are making pony bead rubber band bracelets in Textile and building with K’nex at the Architect Lab.  The Design Lab has a new exciting project - melty framed art.

Second graders will be putting on individual class performances of Journey  Into Space, where they will  be presenting songs that are “out of this world”!  These musical productions will take place the week of April 30th - May 4th.  Keep watching Facebook to see our progress.

@mesnier P.E.

We just finished our unit on floor hockey.  Students started the unit using foam sticks and ended using real floor hockey sticks.  We will have our annual Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser after Spring Break. Hopefully we will be able to get outside and enjoy some nice weather during the last couple months of school.

This month we are learning how to seek first to understand then to be understood.
